Worthy of Restoration?

My mint '67 912 suffered a severe engine fire - my insurance totaled it. Is it worth restoring? Is there anyone in CA who could do this without it costing more than the vehicle is worth? (It is completely original, including the stereo, and I have all mechanical records dating back to '67)

Restore it? That depends.

Insurance companies will gladly sell you your car back - usually for far, far less than it's actually worth. Most of the time you can easily restore it and have money left over.

There are a number of alternatives. Pop in a VW engine, go for a full tilt Maestro masterpiece, or simply part it out - it may be worth more in parts than it is as a whole.

Regardless, sorry about your loss. That's scary. Just reaffirms my notion of putting a halon extinguisher in my car.

there is a gentleman on the 911 board (user id - phoenix) who resurrected his early 911 after an engine fire. the engine had just been rebuilt by motormeister. he might be a good source for info. from what i remember it is a real beauty now.
