Tires/wheels & ride height....
I know this topic has been covered in the past but would like to revisit it since I'm about to replace the rear bushings in my car and will be lowering it at the same time.
Currently my car ('67 stock no flares) with 205/60-15's on 6” wheels at all four corners measures 26" from the ground to the bottom of the fender lip front and rear. Several sources I've found say that the front fender opening should be 25.5" from the ground and the rear should be 25". All of them referenced Bruce Anderson as the source of that measurement, and in his book “Porsche 911 Performance Handbook” on page 175 that is exactly what he says. What I don’t see is a reference to a tire size, which in my case I purchased the car with 5.60-15’s that were approximately 26-1/4” tall and have now installed 205/60-15’s that are just over 24-5/8” tall. That’s a difference of 1-5/8” or 13/16” at the fender. A before and after shot (tire change only) of my car can be found at http://www.geocities.com/ford10n/tires.html , I’ll update the page again when my car has been lowered. So here's what I'm looking for - what size tires/wheels you're running and what are your fender measurements front/rear? Do you encounter any tire rubbing, bump steer problems, etc. with your current setup? Anyone willing to provide me with a picture of their car and the above information I will post to that same page so we can all see what various combinations look like. Thanks…. |

912s,
Don't know if this will help answer your questions but it might be worth checking out. http://www.hillmanimages.com/912/tires.html Craig |

I would recommend you measure ride hieght by the difference between wheel center and torsion bar center. That will be more accurate than a ground to fender-lip measurement (plus that's what the factory manual says to do).
I'd also recommend supporting Pelican with the very worthy purchase of Wayne's fine book, "101 Projects for your Porsche 911" [AND 912 DAMMIT]. Maybe you already have it... Lastly, we discussed this issue in some depth on a previous post: Rear torsion bar settings and ride height Cheers, Enrique |

I appreciate the input, but I'm not after how to do it, that part I understand and have done successfully in the past on other cars with torsion bar suspension. This is my first 912 and am not sure what I can get away with. I want the car as low as possible without causing bump steer or tire rubbing problems.
What I'm after is how others on this board have setup their cars and to see what the setup looks like. Thanks… |

Hello,
I have a 69 and have recently installed 4, 205/55ZR16's. I run 2000 16" Boxster alloy wheels with the before mentioned tires. The inches from the fender to ground is about 25", I lowered my Porsche in the front and am considering doing the same in the rear. With the 16's I needed spacers, they are about 1/2" thick. I think setting up the height is about what your using the car for, in my opinion lower is better. A racer friend says the front end should be higher, go figure... Happy Motoring, Chas. |

Thanks for the input, that's one sharp car. What color is that?

Scot,
Thanks, it a custom mix, but really it very similar to a Chevy Silverado truck, greenish blue with medium metallic flake and a good clearcoat job. thanks again, Chas. |

69 stock flare with 205/50 15 in front and 225/45 15 in rear. Low but with much higher spring rate no rubbing or bottoming out.
