Transmission into engine case
 
Hello there,

I'm having a little problem installing the transmission to the engine case.

The obvious thing to do is to line-up the trans. rod to the engine spline opening and merge the two together and tightened up the 4 bolts...sound easy, but i can't seem lined up the two and of course i don't want to force any thing.

Any one with experience on this matter, please share your knowledge.

Hey Bao,

What did you do to the engine and transmission before you wanted to install them. A rebuild or just a new clutch? Did you align the clutch correctly? Until now I was lucky doing these mating jobs, but I can imagine that you have to turn the main axle from the transmission a few degrees to catch up with the engine. Is the transmission in the car?

A bit more info could help us.

Hi Otto,
Here is some photos of my rebuilt engine, about a week ago. Nice and clean. ;)

The engine was rebuilt, the clutch was balanced by Walt Watson from compeng. My 5 speed trans. has new 1st gear done by the famous Mike L. aka dr. evil.
The turn over nicely but require some tuning on the carbs.

Both the engine and trans. are not in the car.

Just a heads up to inspect the motor mount bracket with the modification for the air pump belt: they like to crack! (I went three for three!)

Hi Bao,

That really looks fine. I didn't know you had a '68. My cocoa brown sunroof is also a '68. The motor mount is indeed a week construction. Mine was fine, but I do not inspect it on a regular basis. Is that VW transmission bell housing you are using as a'starter module'? I mounted one to an engine stand, including the major indicator lights. Works fine for working on the engine as well as tuning it.

You said the engine doesn't run fine. What are the symptoms?

Back to matching the transmission and the engine. As I asked before:are you sure that the clutch is aligned perfectly? If the engine and the transmission came apart, they also should fit. Do you have the alignment tool? If I'm right a VW bug one will also fit.

Are you going to put the engine and transmission as one into the engine bay. My experience is that it's easier to put the transmission in first and then the engine. With the relatively heavy combination it's easy to damage delicate parts like the shifting axle. Of course it's a good thing to prefit the two before the final mating in the engine bay.

Hello Otto,

I use the vw trans. housing as my fire up but it didn't go well. Turn out the inner opening of the housing is a little short and as the engine cranks and flywheel spins it grinds the inner part of the housing with a horrific grinding noise, i have to stop immediately before finding the caused. Lucky for me the housing wasn't steel and no damaged to the flywheel at all.

Since i have stop the fire-up because of the VW trans housing and not able yet to install my original trans to the case i'm not really sure yet if any symptoms should arrived..we'll see.

I will try again to get the trans. fit into the case, i think i need to be a little patience. I've already use the clutch alignment tool to install the flywheel, that went well.

I'm planning on putting the trans. and engine together, then put both as one into the car.

I will try again soon on the trans. and case and will keep posted.

Hi Bao,

Indeed patience is the keyword to this. Did you have to realign the clutch or was it correctly installed?

BTW you have to grind the edges of the bell housing to let the flywheel spin easily in it. Just 2/100 of an inch will do. I had the same problem. Don't worry.

Take your time for the job. I'm looking forward to a photo of the engine in the place where it belongs.

Hi Otto,

The clutch was balance by Walt Watson at compeng. I installed with the plastic rod to keep everything in place and torqued all nuts across each others. I think everything went smooth.

I will take my time and get everything correct and will post more pics. in the future.
