Steering wheel "hockey puck" leather replacement
May be a stupid question..... I removed the hockey puck steering wheel center and want to replace the leather center. Does the chrome ring get removed or do you simply push the leather under the lip? The steel and chrome ring don't seem to separate.
Thanks, Last edited by Concept2; 02-17-2012 at 05:51 PM.. |

I just went through this with a batwing. There are 5 fingers on the back of the puck. you have to carefully fold them up to push up the chrome ring. The chrome ring is extremely vulnerable (flimsy) and once it is bent, it is dun. Stoddard now has a replacement chrome ring for a whopping $150
![]() You'll need a bit of foam. Glue it to the center and then glue the leather pad to the foam. Reinstall and voila, an entire Saturday wasted - but it will look nice!! ![]() |

I just saw your pics - it looks like someone was in there before you as the tabs are gone.... ??
I can see the slots in the base where the tabs go. This is not good. |

Check out the repro at stoddard's site - does that look like it will fit the base?

There was an early puck and trim ring that did not have the tabs that the later rings had. It was an interference fit. If the puck has the slots for the tabs but the tabs are missing from ring then you have an issue.

Tabs
No tabs or parts of tabs that I can see. What does "interference fit" mean?

It means the parts are designed as a press fit. Inside diameter of the ring is made the same size as the outside diameter of the puck.

I've restored my hockey puck
Though not exactly the same issues my thread may help. |

Concept2 did you ever figure out how to replace the leather? Have mine apart and trying to figure out how to either separate the rings of pinch the leather into them.

Hi Seth,
Nope, still stumped. My last options are to buy the Stoddard chrome ring $$$ and reuse the steel center or attempt to separate the two with a punch while its in a vise? Definitely frustrating, you have any ideas? |

I would imagine if you are very carefull and don't mind spending some time, you can undo the crimp and carefully re-crimp (roll) it. May people do a similar thing when they redo the glass on the gauges.
