Happy Camper (somewhat)

So, I finally got the info from Porsche on the COA for the '68 912 Targa that's in pieces in my garage. Their engine number corresponds to one of the ones I picked up when I bought all these projects. Good news! However the trans # they show (from the Kardex they're telling me) is 1081239/902-01. I have # 1081923/902-01. I double checked the #'s today and mine is correct. Could they be dyslexic? Also, they do not show it as being a softie. No where on the Kardex does it indicate that it is/was a softie (according to them). When I picked it up it had a rear window. Judging from the pics I believe it was originally a softie. I just wished it showed that way on the COA. Should I be concerned that it doesn't?

I would say it is too coincidental that the trans numbers would be like they are. Certainly highly possible the COA is incorrect (as has been mentioned many times). Also I would not be suprised of the lack of mention of it being a SWT. You clearly have the correct parts and pieces for it.

In 68 the hard window was an option. They all had the soft window fixers until 69. When they had two different roll bars one for the soft window and one for the hard window. The hard window became standard and the soft window was a option. Some Previous Owners change the soft windows to hard windows.

1969 - Targa "Version I" and "Version II"

From the 1969 Porsche USA "Fact Book" here's page 9 describing the Targas; the text clearly states the fixed rear window was an extra-cost option. In his book Porsche Excellence Was Expected Karl Ludvigsen wrote that as of January 1968 Porsche called the soft-window Targa "Version I", and in consideration of increasing safety regulations replaced the rear seats with a package shelf containing two small lockable compartments. At the same time, Porsche established the fixed glass rear window Targa the "Version II" option.

The Targa bar ventilation slots were added for the 1969 models, both SWT and HWT. The image of the red SWT without Targa bar slots was previously used in 1968 literature as well.

The inset is from an earlier magazine ad.

I'd be a happy camper. It sounds to me like you have the original engine and gearbox on a SWB SWT. Having seen your original thread with everything you hauled home from CA, I would personally be giving this one restoration attention among the first that you guys tackle.

Matt, I agree. It is the first, out of the five, resto we are tackling. It is currently in the tear down mode with about a few more weekends before it heads over to the metal guy. I'm pretty stocked by this find! Thanks for the feedback!
