Otto,

No need to change the pedal cluster to upgrade to dual circuit mst cyl....?

Matt Monson 11-20-2012 09:23 AM

Thanks for the bump to remind me to update. I've been distracted by some health issues with my dog. But shortly before we rushed her to the ER last Friday night, I did get the pedals out. My master cylinder is, well, um, patina'd? aka pretty nasty looking. Looks like some brake work just got added to what I am going to do, though not until I rebuild the pedals and drive it over to my shop. Winter is too close to take it apart further and risk not being able to drive it indoors before the snows hit.

I took a couple of pictures which I will post later and hopefully I will get to the pedals this weekend after turkey day.

Peter,

Basically you are right that you do not need to replace the pedal cluster, but ... If you want to have a copy of the later dual brake system, you need the pedal cluster with the mechanical brake switch. Nevertheless the "old" pressure activated brake switch can be used. In a standard dual brake circuit the brake line to the rear of the car is connected by an L-fitting into the tunnel. Use a T-fitting - also easier to get - in stead of the L-fitting and put the brake light switch in the third opening. Even the original wiring can be used.

It was some time ago I did the upgrade for my '65/'66 and if I remember well the plunger activating the master brake cilinder for the dual circuit is a bit longer. I also decided for the mechanical brake light switch because it is easier to service. To keep a more or less original apearance under the hood, the double brake fluid reservoir was placed in the position of the original single bottle in the smugglers box.

Matt,

How is your dog doing? I hope the vet could diagnose and medicate her. The Porsche can wait.

If you can find some time upload some pics of your progress, please do.

I haven't actually made any progress on the car. PRI was last week and between the trade show and catching up on business, the car hasn't moved forward. I am going to try to get the pedals rebuilt, installed, and drive the car to my workshop before the projected storm tomorrow night. We'll see if it happens.
Anyway, here's pictures. Master Cylinder:

I will be replacing it!
Here's showing how far they went when they replaced the pan:

The pedals on the bench, showing just how much media I am dealing with all over inside of this car:

And another shot of the pan and my progress of removing the "horse hair" soundproofing, which I suspect will be a long process. Gonna be a while before I actually install those pretty carpets I purchased for it.

Thank you for asking. She is getting there. The formal diagnosis is encephalitis aka non-infectious spinal meningitis. Basically, the non-infectious part means there is no virus or bacteria to blame. But she had a swelling of the brain that they suspect is auto-immune related and pretty much took her down to what amounted to a comatose state, with severly reduced respiration and heart rate.

She is on steriods, anti-seizure meds, and immuno suppressant drugs. She will be for 1-2 years. Right now we are figuring out dosages. She sees the neurologist again on Monday, but they think 1 or 2 of the drugs are higher doses than she needs and we will be backing off a bit. She's a bit "dopey" and clumsy and has had a few "accidents". Less drugs are expected to help with that, but they want to do a blood test before changing anything.

In the majority of these cases they never know what caused the incident. They know how to treat it and can give her a fully functioning full length life. But we might not ever discover the cause and there is no guarantee she won't have a relapse at some point.

Pedals are too far gone to save. I drilled out the roll pin and the shaft is still super siezed on the clutch pedal. I can't for the life of me figure out a way to press it apart. So, the question becomes, what year use pedal assembly is a direct replacement? I don't care about dual master cylinder. I just it to be a safe driver...

I've got a '67 912 in transit to me as I type this. Being that it is my 4th 912 variant and I've only owned three 911s, this puts me one up in the 912 column. I'm declaring myself a 912er. Pictures to follow this afternoon. SmileWavy

SmileWavy Hiya Matt! 912er eh? You started this thread on 914.

Is you dog doing better this week? She's a cool pooch.

Grats on the 912. I like it.

Just picked up a 75 911S. I need 915 options. I'll be in Boulder tomorrow morning. Tell me where you're at and I'll stop by. Sent you an email.

Wow, can't believe I've neglected this thread for nearly 6 months. I've been driving the car now and again. Installed a 1976 911 set of pedals. Interior is stripped. TRE roll bar/harness bar is test fit but the mounting plates aren't welded down. I will have to post some random pictures soon. Going to order up new seats and get some shoes put on the Fuchs shortly. Once race season hits I get so busy with work that my projects either get neglected or my updates do...

Matt Monson 05-20-2013 10:23 AM

Baby got some new shoes...

Sorry I don't have more pictures. Once I got the wheels changed over I decided to go for a Sunday drive instead of anything else on the car. Probably be ordering the seats and belts this week. SmileWavy

Matt:

OK, Drive It!

Where are you? Our 912s should meet!

I'm in Boulder County. Gonna miss the next Cars n Coffee because I am sponsoring a POC race that weekend and headed to Fontana. But maybe we can find some time when I get back.
