repair of rusty torsion bar tube

Hello friends!

Please take a look at this rusty torsion bar tube. May it be possible to restore the ends of the tube?

It is all restorable with an abundent amount of time, money and parts. The more difficult is the center section where the torsion bars index into. Have you checked that?

If there is sufficient 'flange' to keep the inner bushing from 'walking' and the rust isn't too deep, the area can be wire brushed (drill, extension, rotary wire brush/cup), treated with SEM Rust Seal (or similar) and then finish coated.

+1 for John's comment: if the inner t-bar index has a lot of rust, it becomes a safety issue.

I've attached a couple of photos from my 68 912 SWT which had similar issues.

Peter

Flange:

After Rust Seal application, before full cure (not a great photo; reflection):

Yes...the center part seems to be OK. Question is, if it is possible to renew the ends of the tube or if it is better to replace the tube as such. The worst end is the left one probably caused by worn rubber bushings.

The torsion tube is a fairly complex structure with respect to the chassis: there are three panels and one reinforcement plate used to attach the tube at each side of the chassis. I have some photos of a tt assembly I cut from a 1968 912 (it was long ago sold):

I hope this helps you evaluate your situation.
