HELP!!! Alternator!!!
 
While my engine was dropped on my '76 912e I took the alternator off to get it rebuilt...mean time I put the engine back in and now cannot get the alternator to fit back in...Do I have to drop the engine to get the alternator back in???!! HELP!

It's done with the engine in the car, but it's a tight squeeze. You might have to remove the right (pass side) heat exchanger, but you can try it first with it in place. Under the car, try to work it above the exhaust, then start tilting & contorting it until it can be raised into position. It's extremely awkward and have the first bolt ready to go in (the pivot one closest to center of engine.) Don't forget the sealing ring on the belt side of the alternator. If it just won't go, drop the exchanger. Mine went in with the exchanger in place, but it was pretty much a zero clearance operation and involved about 20 trips under & on top of the engine. If you can get that far, remember to try to get the belt on if possible before bolting it all up, or you'll have to pull the fan pulley (one of VW's not-so-great ideas.)
