Question Total Seal piston rings

I just bought a set of TS piston rings and am wondering if anyone else has used these on these cars...what were your results?

I also bought the ring grinding kit to custom fit the rings.
Any pointers on the rings or how the engine will run?

I'm also using real NPR pistons and cylinders on a standard 66 912 block with a Scat crank and a street cam with Comp. Eng. heads and 40 mm webers.
The Webers have been jetted and refitted with bigger venturis...what are the estimates on Horsepower out there?

Thanks,
Erik.

What work did CE do to the heads? If just nice rebuilt then little added HP if they worked for increased flow then you will see some increase. Stock displacement or 1720? What header system and size are you using?

Assuming stock displacement, stock cam, Webber 40s, (I will guess opened to 32mm) rebuilt head but same valve size and flow #s.
90 HP is stock and there is little to increase it with your rebuild. My wildassguess would be somewhere around 90 to 95HP If you have the 1720s then add 10 or so depending on the rest. Big bore helps more in the bottom end with a stock intake/header setup. Even with the rest stock you can feel better “pull” comming out of the corners. Your rebuild is a recipe for a good long lasting street motor. I too use Scat cranks and they are bullet proof. They look so good is almost a shame to put them in a motor.

Displacement, compression ratio, heads, cam, headers, are where the added HP is in a 356/912 but the more you add the shorter it will last.

sorry, I should have given more details.

I don't expect anything as far as hp gains out of the heads, though they were decked, cc balanced, new valves, new guides, etc.

I'm using a hotter cam...new Porsche stock ground to .365 lift with 280 duration.

Yeah, the webers were opened up with 32mm venturis, and different jets as per PMO specs.

Running a balanced set of NPR big bore with total seal piston rings.

Balanced scat crank, balanced (end-for-end and tw) reconditioned and rebushinged rods.

Lightened flywheel, Gene Berg balancer cramk pulley, NLA aluminum oil cooler.

New 050 distributor with Pertronix lit by an MSD firing to Jacobs helically wound wires.

Haven't decided on my compression ratio yet, Maestro of course says to keep it at 8.8:1, but I've been told by others that I can safely go to 9.0:1 or 9.1:1...any dissenting views?

I've heard estimates on this setup to bag me 130hp, but I'm having a tough time believing that the cam, big bore, and Webers will make that much difference!

Erik.

130 might be a little optimistic but you will feel good improvement from stock! I am running 288 deg cam with med/high lift, unshrouded intakes, dual springs, 1720 JEs set to 9.3 to 1. Webber 40 with 32mm ventures, lightened flywheel stock heads, 050 with points to a digital 6 MSD and a Bursh 1.58 header. We planed this setup to keep good street drivability but increased pull at the top end as well as better torque in the corners.

Lots more but the above is where the HP is. Motor BHP is about 126 and the torque curve is nice and flat and tops out around 100 FT-Lbs. The “sweet spot” is from 4000 to 6000 RPM but the motor is still pulling at 6500. I keep it under 6500 day to day and 6800 track but this setup will handle 7000+ easily. Hp #s are while using a “J” pipe drop 5 to 10 for a muffler. As far as CR. 9.5 is the max you should even think of on pump gas (93 oct) if longevity is a concern. Lots of motors that are higher CR run on pump gas but pre detonation will develop even if you cannot hear it while driving. There is MUCH more to do that will get lots more HP but the cost will be a shorter motor life.

BTW...shamless plug to follow....
This motor and the build details are in Duane Spenser’s book “356 Performance guide”. He is just finishing up a book for just us 912 folks. Duane told me that it will cover 2 improvement paths full race and “improved” but still drivable (mine) Covering motors, transmissions, suspension, what and how, all the good stuff. I hope it is as good as his 356 books are.
