912 Transmission Type Puzzle
I’ve got a 1966 912. I don’t yet have a Cert. Of Authenticity from Porsche, but I believe that the engine is the original. I am not sure about the transmission, and here is why. . .
First of all, I’ve got a five speed transmission, however the stamped transmission type number is 902/0. All documentation that I’ve read indicates that the ‘0’ corresponds to a four-speed transmission. Is that right? Is it possible to add different gears to a 902/0 tranny thus making it a 5 speed? Other information: The date stamp on the tranny is 10/66. However, according to other information on the car (eg. Chassis #, engine #, engine case #, engine date stamp, etc) and Harry “The Maestro” Pellow’s database my car was one of the last several hundred ’66s, built around March or April of 1966. Certainly by 10/66, the date on my tranny, the ’67 models were being built, don’t ya think? Anyway, my conclusions are that my transmission was (1) from a 1967 912, (2) originally a 4-speed, and (3) rebuilt into a 5-speed. Does anyone out there have any insight to this puzzle? Brandon, I read that the 902/0 is a 912 4 speed and that the 902/02 is the 912 5 speed. Sometimes the Transmission #s get damaged, as they are right on the rib that lends itself well as a jack point. Perhaps the “2” was obliterated?
As to your 4 in to a 5 question, I am not sure but I seem to remember that it can be done but is kind of a pain to do. I have a trany Guru that I will ask on Monday. Try posting on the 911 site. You might interest Early S Man who well versed in early transmissions. (As well as most other things Porsche) This Sat the 17th there will be a Potomac Tech session for an upcoming event. Bring the 912 and we can put it on a lift and check it out. Check the Potomac site or email me for info if you can make it. Kurt |
