912 Maximum Horsepower?

All,

Kind of a newbie to engines and restoration. I am looking at a car and it has a 912 engine in it. I have been searching to see what is the maximum reasonable horsepower I can get out of the 912 engine. Heard of big bore kits, etc but wanted some input.

Thanks!

Did you want to stay with the same block? A little creativity and you could stuff a 450hp LS3 V8 in there... or a 3.6L 964 motor. The only limitations are your imagination and bank account. If you want to stick with the 4cyl, Lloyd Mosier can set you up. He has a shop near me and I believe he holds the world record 1/4 mile with a 2.0L VW motor. 600hp??

Budget, NA/FI, fuel choice, longevity, all matter when choosing a performance envelope for your build. Lloyds 2.0L Ghia motor is good for 149 rwhp so that is probably a good target for a street NA motor.

A 616 motor with an 86mm big bore kit along with the correct camshaft should yield around 130 HP. If built correctly, the increase in power will not affect longevity. A full flow oil filter is recommended as part of the build. More information can be found on the 912 BBS
