engine's in, oil's out...

got the engine back in after a new clutch installation, new exhaust seals on the j-tubes, repainting of the sheet metal, as well as a few other basic odds and ends...it turns over and runs-always a great thing to occur after having it on the garage floor for a while, but there are two problems...

1. oil is pouring out of the top of the oil filter housing...it's not the seal so I am guessing it's simply a matter of lining up the tiny hold in the oil return tube properly where it meets the pressure/sensor housing (ran out of time yesterday)...also, the new oil filter is smaller in diameter than the old one so that could be another issue...i haven't looked at the diagram yet, but does oil flow up from the bottom, through the filter and out through the top return tube? that would give me a head start...

2. with accelartion (in neutral on the ramps) i get a dull sound from the engine like it's not really doing anything...i haven't really done any investigation on this part yet (re-checking all connections etc.) but will this afternoon...any ideas would be greatly appreciated in advance

enjoy the holiday!

Hey Dale
Glad to here she's back together. Maybe it is 'the seal'. Smaller filter? Maybe a smaller seal too.The Secrets book said something about that.

Brett

How about a 912get together soon about midway 495/95?

Any Mid-Atlantic 912ers interested in making a trip to Pittsburgh
on the weekend of July 19-21. They are having vintage car races and the "P" car is a featured markey.

brett and howard...definitely interested in catching up with some local 912ers, it would be great to see what else is out there and to catch some local racing, keep me posted

as for the oil leak, it was the return line, ended up etching a line corresponding with the pinhole on the face of the bolt that enters the temp/pressure connection to make sure it was lined up with the hold on the return line coming from the top of the filter housing...engine came through like a champ, runs like it never has before...the exhaust leaks at the head-j tube connection produced a popping noise that made the engine sound more like a lawn mower or poorly tuned vw...now it hums just like it should, such a beautiful sound, so sweeeet!

Sounds like your filter cover gasket has failed. Is it new? What kind of oil filter are you using? I use a Mahle & have had no problems with gasket leaks. The inlet is the line running to the top of the filter- the line coming out the bottom is the outlet. Good luck :)

duke and others...

the filter leak is under control, had to crank the bolt down a bit but it has finally disappeared...now i am losing oil from the valve cover (after the installation of the re-usable, steel centered cork gaskets) they worked like a charm on one side, but the other is still leaking at the bottom...any success stories with these gaskets would be appreciated. i am going to clean the base again to make sure there isn't any remaining gasket remnants...should i tighten the spring, check for a ruler straight cover??? i guess both would be prudent, just have to stop driving it for a minute, it's just been too much fun now that the engine is purrring like a champ! i feel like the little dutch boy with his finger in the dike and would be happy to see a slowing of the oil hitting my exhaust pipe , it's just not a great smell...

mid-atlantic 912ers unite!

Fellas,
I'd like to extend the invitation to meet up Saturday July 20. I'm located right where 495 meets 95 North to Baltimore. It's very close and easy to get to my house from the Beltway. I'll grille up hot dogs/chicken, etc. Anyone interested? What time would be good? I'll be around all day, but it would be best if we could find a 1-2 hour window so folks could eat, chat, check out each others cars, etc. There are already two other Porsche People in my 'hood, (one with a veritable scrapyard of '69-'73 911s).

If there's any interest in this idea I'll start a separate post. Also, you can email me directly at
mcrosby@sipress.si.edu

Cheers!
