School me on 912's
Looking at buying a 912 roller or with engine and box going to swap a 6cyl anyway. What is there to look out for want to do a 912-911R conversion.
Questions: How much? What to look out for? Where to source engine/ general parts? Any other things to be aware about. Any help would be appreciated, Cheers, Dean. |

Dean,
Why would you take a 912 and do an engine swap to get a 911? If I would like to have a 911R, I would buy the best maintained 911 I could afford and build the 911R from there. In the end your investment will be less than starting with a roller. To my opinion, starting with a roller only makes sense if it is a rare model and all the work and money invested will result in extra value compared to an average model. Just do a "911R" search here on the board and you will see a lot of examples in many variations of 911R(-like) P-cars. Use them as inspiration for your project. Otto |

If you want a 911 buy a 911. The 912 is a different situation.

You will need everything in the engine compartment. The wiring harness is the same for both 911 and 912. The 912 transaxle will have different gearing than the 911. You will have to change the instruments to 911 type. You will also loose the 912 forgiving handling. With the new 911 engine the car will be very tail happy unless it is a 69 LWB, The SWB car you will have add the 40lbs weight upfront.
In the end all you will have is 912 vin car wishing it was a real 911. It will also never bring the price that a real 911 of the same year would bring. If you are going racing then the vin will not make a difference. If you decide to sell it. You will have to disclose that it is a 912 converted to a 911. It is better to find a cheap 911T and work on this. |

Generally speaking, i think you can typically buy a 912 roller cheaper than the same year 911 roller. If you don't care about value, resale, etc., stuffing a low mileage 3.2 into a 912 would make a fun car, and cheaper than buying a SWB 911 with the same setup.
Personally, I wouldn't do that to a 912, but I did do it to a 914 once. ![]()

It may sound crazy but I probably won't sell it unless I desperately needed the money and it was life or death then it would go but in Australia I think value will rise. But that's just me
