NPR big bore

Have a 1969 912 engine. Engine is stock, never been apart. I have an NOS ( approx 1985 )set of NPR cast iron 1750 cyl and pistons from about I would like to install. I have heard various stories about the need for thicker than normal cylinder shims to avoid the pistons hitting the head? Also stories that there was no problems if using the latest 912 heads? Any one have a definative answer?
