Car last used in 1985

Hello to all. Great forum. Purchased a 1968 912 from a friend that stopped using the car after the starter went. He pushed it in the garage and there it stayed till June of this year. I have replaced the gas tank, checked the fuel pump and took the Solex's apart to clean them up ( they didnt spray gas when you pushed in on the accel pump, they seem fine now) Now the question, I removed the plugs and put a gauge in to check pressure, I only checked the front ones on each side. I got a reading of 120pounds. Should I spray something in each cylinder before I try to start the car ?Thanks for any info.

I wouldnt spray anything in the cylinders, but it would be wise to crank it over for a minute until oil press comes up or oil light goes out. Then when your ready to start pump the accelerator while cranking until engine starts. After it has set that long it will start hard the first time. Then drive it.
I had my car in storage for many years at a time and this has always worked for me. See ya Mike

I assume you've changed the engine oil. I would also replace all the ignition pieces and do a valve adjust. Like previously stated, build some oil pressure first, then ignite. Don't be alarmed if you see a lot of smoke - it should burn away after a little while.

Let us know how things turn out - and then go take it to a 912 Rendezvous.

remember brakes! you will find if there ok now and not leaking, after a few weeks of use, calipers will start to leak. Thats if there not seized already. Just remember everything rubber probably will have hardened and shrunk. The best part will be, you will have to drive the pants off the thing to get all the bugs out.

Good luck.

i have to second damon on getting the bugs out...one of my favorite quotes from a local mechanic...

"drive it like you're angry"...

seemed like bad advice at first, but I soon understood what he meant...let us know what other ailments you run into as you bring it back up to speed and best of luck!
