I'll have to put Heuer rally decals over my old mirror holes on the door but I'd rather deal with that instead of the crap I have now.

That's quite an investment, but the chrome will look great on your 912. Are you sure you need/want to cover the holes and mount the new ones a bit more forward on the door?

Thought of little covers in chrome or sprayed in your car's paint color to camouflage the holes. I guess the door is painted under the mirror and there are just two 8 mm holes. A few covers, a rattle can in the right color, some polish and you have a more professional result than a decal.

I agree but the color has been on there for 15 years and the PO had it done and didn't even take off the mirror bases:eek:. I will definitely look for a shop to give it a try.

That's nice. Does the wing window obstruct the view? Some say they have to put those on the fender.

You know... I sat in the car & adjusted the Talbot lens to suit me. It was/is ideal. I used the factory holes and this is an original to the car door.

I never thought of it not working well... I had ordered a reproduction non-script Talbot copy from a vendor (it was nice) but I happened upon this real one with perfect patina so...

My Son is like "really? A Talbot?" as he thinks those are better suited for 300SL or Jag's / Sunbeam Tigers. But I like 'em on 12's too and because of that got a kick out of seeing the Talbot reference on the certificate from Porsche for this car. With that said I will admit that a Durant or rectangle style mirror does look proper.

If I remember well, there are two versions of the stainless early 70's mirror, both with the same Porsche factory part number. The smaller of the two was intended for the 911 RS-version and are quite rare and therefore pricy. The bigger ones are much cheaper and also available in a repro version.

I apologize at forehand if I'm wrong regarding details on this. Perhaps someone can confirm it.

The smaller Durant mirror was used from 65-67, the larger from 68-71, and the chrome rectangle mirror from 72-75.

The Talbot mirror was offered from 1965-1968. Both right and left mirror were listed in the accessories catalogs, along with the text stating that they were not installed at the factory, dealership only installation. In 68 the left side mirror was noted as being illegal in the US and Germany due to it's small size. This is for both the Durant and Talbot mirrors. Talbot did come out with a larger mirror, however, it was no longer offered.

Thanks to all also. The part# is the same for the 72-75 square flag mirrors but the smaller one is 72-73 and the larger one was late 73-75. That's what they tell me at ESR and a search done on that forum reveals quite a long thread on sorting all that out. Not that there was no confusion, but that was what they decided.

The usual discussions are over what Vin# that the change occurred.

My old German 74 S had the larger mirror. A thing that was interesting, it had no outlet for an exhaust pipe. The rear valance was one piece made of steel. It required a sport muffler.
