912 carburetor thermostat require adjustment?

I have always wondered and have now searched with no luck. Do the 912 carburetor heat thermostats require adjustment like type one Vw?
I set mine for full open while the thermostat is cold and compressed... I imagine that they extend to closed from there and rest where the flaps shut? I just wanted to double check before running it, before I break one of the world's last working 912 thermostats, lol!
Thanks,
Christopher

BTW, what's the crook in the rod for? I'm not quite understanding that one... is that supposed to be straight up?

Christopher,

Basically you are right - open when cold and closed when hot. The closing temp is pressed into the back of the thermostat - 24-30 Celsius.

The preheating system was mentioned for use of our engines - 356 as well as 912 - in colder climates, like here in the north of Europe. If the car is only used in summer or in a milder climate, you don't need the preheating of the carbs.

If you want to keep the engine look like it left factory, you could leave the preheater on the engine. For this cosmetic use, as with a faulty thermostat, it is important that you keep the flaps closed - blowing hot air into a hot engine bay could overheat the engine and cause damage. Permanently closed flaps can be adjusted by means of the rod length.

You can check the function of the thermostat with some water - in cold water it shrinks and in hand warm water it should stretch. Don't use a heat gun or a similar hot source.

Otto
