mystery hole...

I am repairing the last bit of rust on my 69. When I look into the compartment in the front lid where you access the steering column, there was some type of round hole that opens to the ground. It had some type of paper?? plug it. The hole looked to be about 2 inched in diameter. What is the function of having this opening? Can I just cover where it was with new steel? Any comments wuold help. Thanks, Don

Don: I have the same on my 69. I think it is a hole for the accessory gas heater exhaust pipe. That would be the only place it could be vented. Maybe someone with a gas heater can tell us. Thanks, Ron D

yep thats what it is for, the gas heater exhaust, my 5/8 exhaust tube runs thru that hole and exits 0ver the back axle. You should keep some type of drain hole that way when you fill the box with cold beer and ice it can still drain..... Craig
