EGR Light Reset Button
 

Sorry guys but I did do a search and one of the threads mentioned an EGR reset button located in the speedometer cable circuit for a '76 912E. My light came on yesterday and I want to reset it properly and not just cut a wire. I'm sorry to admit that I can't find the white box and button. My owners manual says the light is timed to come on each 30,000 miles to remind you to have the EGR system checked by Porsche, and there is no mention of how it can be reset. Can anyone help me locate that reset button and thank you in advance.

Try this: Disconnect your battery ground. If you've pulled the speedo, check for a small square box in there - check behind the tach area. If you haven't pulled the speedo, pull the tach first & look in there towards the back of the speedo. Assuming you find it, look for a small, round protrusion coming off of it and press the inner surface in with a ball point pen, etc.
My 912E was rock-stock & had no EGR warning system, but had the valve,plumbing, etc. Maybe an early car or originally non-CA, or a Stuttgart Goof.

Thanks Mr. Bowen, I'll get in there tonight and look around. What I did last evening was look in the boot and engine compartment (no reference manuals which makes it difficult) for something obvious but failed to turn up anything. I never thought to actually pull out the tach or speedometer, but that makes sense the unit is integral with the speedometer housing. I am the 3rd. owner of a car originally purchased in California, and it too is bone stock and in excellent condition. I recently read an article in Panorama regarding instrument renovation and I believe all I need to do is work off the instrument bezel with a soft (plastic) type scraper and then pull out the tach. Again I thank you for taking time to reply. By the way my wife and I love the old 912E .......... Rich G.

Your gauges should just pull out, with a little twisting-these later gauges are held in by a rubber collar. It's usually easiest to pull the tach first, then the speedo.

I just wanted to thank you again ..... This past weekend, I pulled the Speedo and found the reset button inside the dash just like you said. A flashlight helped in finding it, and it was even marked as EGR reset.
