Crank Pulley and Generator pulley

My Crank pulley and generator pulley are out of alignment which is creating a throw off problem with belt. Has anyone had this problem. It is racking my brain!!! The Generator pulley is out farther than the crank pulley. I tried a new backing plate but generator holes are not the same. The generator is not new. I did not note this when I started my project. I'm assuming that it was like that when I started. the only thing that has changed is a new Skat Crank. I measured that and it is the same as my old crank. pulleys are installed correctly as they can only go on one way. backing plate only goes on one way.. I am lost. anyone else had this problem???

Thanks

Pulley Problem

More likely than not, the pulley halves on the generator or on backwards. pull them off, turn them around and see it that works. I had that issue when I bought my 912. Thought it was the wrong generator, etc. Easy fix.

Pictures can sometimes help with a problem.

Did the fan bolt on OK, and can turn freely without rubbing? Is the fan on backwards? Is the back of the generator flush with the Air/fan housing (dog House) front plate? Is the Dog house on correctly? Is it the right Generator?

Sometimes it is hard to diagnose a problem without seeing it.

Ok here are some photos. the first picture is before I took the engine apart for rebuild. the others are after the rebuild trying to complete it. it looks like it was this way before I started. the only thing I can come up with is the generator is wrong size. Hope you see what I don't see.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Spencer,
Just took a look at my '68 and the backing plate is on the other way. It's recessed into the dog house rather than the way yours looks in the last picture.

Yeah, I thought that was the problem too after looking at a 356.. I went and bought the different backing plate and the mounting holes are too narrow. I'm beginning to believe that I have the wrong generator. it is a GR15X. It measures 6 3/4 inches from front to back and 10 inches total end of bolt to end of bolt..

Thanks though

Tony I think you are right I have found out that the generator had been changed out sometime ago. Upgraded to a bigger generator. the backing plate is suppose to be for a 69 912. and we now believe that I have a VW back plate. Now I just need to find the right plate and I think my problem is solved.

thanks again
Spencer.

The two generators use different mounting parts all of which "fit", but can result in the wrong clearances.
Some of the parts that are different are: Rear mounting nut (towards front of car); Carrier plate; Fan; cover plate and fan hub. I did a similar conversion a few years ago and laid out all of the parts from both cars, hoping to choose those in the best condition, when I realized just how different (even slightly) the setups are.
Here's a photo posted by member djdsc several years ago when we both posted on a similar situation.

The early engines will have a smaller generator and a smaller generator stand. If the early Generator has been replaced with a larger one then the stand was probably replaced. You will have to stay with a larger generator, the one for the 69 912.

The first picture is a backing plate for a small generator. The second in a picture of a large generator.

WFBowen it is the picture on the right that I need. and to Jaems the bottom pic. Just found out that it is the 1969 set up that I am looking for. I can find a new back plate but I believe there are three pieces. anyone have a pic of the third piece. I have the small ring. I can get that part I have in the pic. And I know there is a paper gasket. Is the fan different and is the set up two or three pieces? I actually think I have the correct fan by looking at WF picture.

Sorry. Can't help with that piece. Thought I may have a spare used generator but I know I don't have the fan system spare.

The number 61 is for the GR 26x generator 90 mm. Mine was converted some time ago to the larger GR15x larger diameter. I did find the back plate I think. Thanks for all the help we will some how get to the bottom of this problem.
