1969 912 cv flange to cv flange dim.

Got a 1969 912 without engine or transaxle. Originally came with a 5 speed and Loebro cv's. My query is simply, what is the cv flange to cv flange width of this transaxle in millimeters or inches.

Not sure why you need to know that. I have a 1969 also, and the transmissions are a bit flaky for that year. They are longer than earlier transmissions, but not sure the width or axle length. I am told the length is in the nose piece, not the main case. The easiest solution is to get a transmission from the right year, 1969. (1970-71 reversed the action on the throwout bearing, but can be fit in with a little parts replacing).

Aluminum cases for the first half of 1969 are number 902/04 and 902/05 for 4 and 5 speeds, respectively. (The 911 have 901/06 as 4 speed and 901/07 for 5 speeds and they fit exactly.)

The second half year transmissions are magnesium cases, and are numbered 902/55 (912 5 speed) and 901/75/76/77/78/79 are all for the 5 speed 911 cases. (The 911 cases have different gear ratios, but that may or may not bother you).

This info is from the factory release for the 1969 Model Year change, page 53. (Title is "Transmission modifications for '69 models." All have 7:31 ratio ring/pinions and no 1969 has limited slip differential. The factory says they have a "Modified half-axle flange for the larger LOBRO half-shaft." I think that refers to the diameter of the flange and not the length, but I never tried to fit an older axle into a1969-72 car.

If I come across an axle length I'll let you know, but all long-body axles should fit until the 915 transmission was produced, so look for for axles from 1969-72.

This may not be what you want, but makes for an easier solution. For parts, check with EASY or the parts farm in McMinnville, Oregon. (I have a spare set of axles in the garage, but measuring them isn't accurate, because there is play in the joints).

Page 49 says that the LOBRO shafts are "The LOBRO half-axle in larger version modified to the new wheelbase, and new stub shaft for the changed wheel mounting." That should make it easy to find the right axles: the stub shafts are different, and are fairly easy to differentiate.

Get a picture of both kinds from the parts manual. Then you will recognize the right one.

Here is a picture of axle lengths from my archive. Don't know if this is what you are looking for. If you are looking for axles for a 69 912 I have two I may sell. Send me a pm if you are interested.

Just a point of clarification, but the change in length comes from the intermediate bearing plate, which sits between the housing and the tailcone. The mag case bearing plate is about twice as thick as the aluminum ones. And they are not interchangeable.
