We're in the process of moving and when taking my car there last week my wife told me that I didn't have any brake lights, turn signals, running lights all ok... but no brake lights!
Today I thought I do a little homework in case tomorrow I get the chance to look at it when I'm there painting (ugh!) and couldn't find any info in my shop manuals. So I went to my parts manual to see what it shows and it lists a switch for '68 and up, and shows different bearing plates for '65-67 and '68-up, the '68-up shows a mounting tab for a switch where the early one doesn't, and no reference to a switch for '65-67. On the web I did find pictures to support what I found in my parts manual, but still no location to my switch... Dave's '66, in the tech articles here. To aid in confusing me Pelican lists a common switch for '65-71 model cars. So where's my switch hiding? Thanks... Last edited by 912s; 08-31-2002 at 05:09 AM.. |

There is only two places I can think of it could be.
The master cylinder or the the pedal cluster. Chas. |

On my 69 the switch is on the base of the brake pedal. Take it off & look at the points inside. You may be able to sand these down & make it work again. I did this & it worked, may save you a few bucks for a new one.

About a year ago I did this job on my '67. Bought a VW type switch at Advance Auto and found it to be an exact replacement. It mounts on the underside of the mastercylinder. Don't get fluid in your eye!

You can quickly check if its the switch by turing the ignition on and then make a connection between the two wires off the switch (which is on the Master Clykinder on a 67) or if there is only one wire (I can't remember) earth it out.... if the breaks work then it's the switch.
I only say this as I've known bulbs to blow on the same day... Just a thought Alan.UK |

Yep! it's on the master cylinder... I followed a pair of wires down thru the floor. Although I can't get to the switch (no real tools here until this weekend!). There's some sort of cover that connects the floor pan to the trunk pan which covers the master cylinder and I can't get my arm in thru the side.
Jac - Did you just carry it in there and ask for a '67 VW switch? Thanks. |

Scott,
You'll need to take that cover off, it just gives some form of protection from road debris. Alan.UK |

At Advance Auto parts it was the only VW brake switch they stock for old bugs and found it by cross refrence.
Don't have part # ... less than $10. |
