912E Suspension Bushings
The March 2002 issue of Panorama has a tech article on early 900 series suspension bushing replacement. I just read the article this morning, and thought I'd post a question as to how many of you may of replaced the suspension bushings. I'm particularly interested in the 912E since that is what we own, but all comments are welcome regarding any year 912. The article got me thinking that my car's bushings are probably original and have never been replaced. I have my cars history and previous owner never raced the car or modified it. My car rides well and handles well, but the article makes a good point about bushing age and deterioration. If you have replaced the bushings, did you use OEM bushings or 3rd party and which type? Thank you for reading ......... Spring is finally coming to WPa ..... Rich G.

Rich,
I did mine last fall. Neatrix rubber on rear torsion plates. Poly on front. I put Zerk fittings on the front bushings and put a shot of grease every oil change. No Squeaks. Everythings tight. Enjoy, Duane

I replaced the rear spring plate bushings and the front torsion bushings all with poly bushings. Since I had the A-arms off I went ahead and replaced the ball joints on each one. It made a big difference on the way the car handled and tracked. It was like a new car. If your suspension bushings are orginal or over 10 years old, I would highly recommend changing them out. The poly bushings are hardier and do squeak sometimes. Grease helps. I think Neatrix has a new rubber type bushings similar to OEM and may be more like stock and no squeaks.
I hope this helps. Jones Low 69-912 |

I noticed that the outer spring plate bushings on my 912E have to be replaced. Do I have to replace the inner bushings as well or is it just recommend and I could well get away with just replacing the outer ones?

I would replace all four of them (both inner and outer). It wouldn't make sense just to replace the outer or inner only or just one side only. The orginals were made of rubber and by now they will be hard and brittle. You will there all ready if you can get to the outer one, just a little more effort to replace the inner.

Dirk,
Your tires will wear badly with deteriorated spring plate bushings as well. As Jones said, they aren't too tough to replace. David

What do you guys think of the A-arm needle bearing bushings described in the Grassroots 914 project? I think it was a "Shine Racing" product?
I like Chuck Moreland's product too. If they had been available when I did my suspension I would have gone that route.
