Regulator 1968 912
I have my 1968 Porsche 912 running for the first time in a year and almost as soon as I got on the road for a road test the red generator light came on steady. I’m looking for suggestions as what to do next.
The shop manual (Clymer) says: “1. As the ignition switch is turned, the red ignition warning light should come on. 2. Remove the generator cable from terminal D+ on the regulator. The light should go out. (it does not) 3. If the light stays on, the cable is shorting to ground. Check cable and correct problem, then reconnect to terminal D+/61.” I have disconnected both the blue wire from the regulator to the idiot light, and the red wire from the generator to the regulator D+; neither appears to be shorted to ground. However the resistance between terminal D+ (generator disconnected) is very low. I then disconnected the battery from the regulator (B+), started and ran the engine at various speeds, and checked the voltage at the D+ terminal; the reading was minimal (under ½ volt). The regulator and generator are original. Thank you. Norman Thomas |

The points could be sticking in the Regulator.

Jaems,
Thank you for your suggestion. Is that something that a gentle tap will fix, or should I just replace it? |
