Rebuild engine and trans time 1968 912

Spent the afternoon pulling the engine and trans out. The plan is to rebuild the engine and trans for my Fall and Winter project and have it back running by Spring.

The compression was borderline and oil consumption is one quart in 500 miles. The first and second gear syncros are also worn.

I am sure I will be looking for help and advice.:) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413177108.jpg

My philosophy is to minimize downtime during extended operations by acquiring 'spares': in this case an engine and a transmission. Invariably other issues will arise ('slippery slope') that will require more money/time to address. My personal opinion is that one fall/winter season is not adequate time to do both jobs (engine and transmission) unless you have a lot of spare time and/or farm work out.

Don't know if you've seen them, but I'd be happy to loan you my copy of the Harry Pellow Engine Rebuild videos and/or Dr. Evil's Transmission Rebuild videos. They do give a pretty good overview of what is involved in each process and help with developing a plan and budget.

It's funny to hear the Northern Pelicans start talking about lining up their Winter projects this time of year, when here in Florida, driving season is just getting started after a sweltering and very wet summer and early Fall.

Send me a note if you are interested in borrowing the DVD's and good luck with your project(s).

Thanks Brandon I would love to borrow both videos, checked on Harrys site and looks like they are no longer available. I also did the Dr. Evil's PNW Transmission clinic last month to rebuild my 914 transmission.

And yes the first storm of the season is coming in tonight, but if I didn't have a rainy season I would never get anything done on my cars.

Good luck with your 68 unique car and Brandon thanks for this flag .

Got the case split and in the process of cleaning parts and inspection.

Thinking about going to a big bore pistons and cylinders. Has any one else gone to a big bore pistons and cylinder? Was there a noticeable improvement in power? Any other issues good or bad?
