Looking at short wheel base 912.
Trying to determine if the engine is original. The number is in the correct range for the year but it is stamped on the generator stand rather then the engine case.

That is where the engine number is suppose to be, on the third piece of the engine case.

The number is on the piece above that on the stand. There is a number in the area that you circled but it starts with a P, O, S, then 5 numbers. The number on the stand does fit the year range but POS number I can't find any info on it.

There will be a Star, the number and then anther star, with made in Germany under the number on the third piece. Just like in the picture. If the engine number is not there on the third piece, then it is a replacement engine. Or someone was trying to change the engine number. The replacement engines had no numbers. Unless the Dealer replacing the engine stamped in the original number. There would be no engine number on the stand.
The factory also made industrial engines up until 59. Until 1968 model year the number will start with a 7 or a 8 ( 8 for Swedish and German cars only with European heaters) In 68 they started with 108 or 128. This info is per your description. Pictures are more helpful and can make for more accurate information. Last edited by Jaems; 10-20-2014 at 08:44 AM.. |
