Quick question...
Took the Porsche for a little run Friday night( haven't driven it at night previously other than half mile down the road to the corner store)...nice little ride about 25 miles through deserted winding back roads to a buddies house. Everything went fine until about halfway there...I was making a right turn...I noticed that both of the indicator arrows were flashing(like they would if you had the hazard lights on)...I though this odd so I pulled over and checked and only the right exterior lights were flashing...figured oh well just a phantom no problem...got back in the car and made about another mile and noticed...the green engine light just starting to flicker...then the red light started to flicker(I was beginning to regret the deserted backroad choice...especially when I noticed I had forgotten to bring my phone)...I pulled over and figured ok I must have slung the belt...no such luck. I checked everything ove and found nothing...got back in and fired her up...no warning lights...drove the rest of the way there with no further problems. On the way back no problems until I was pulling into my drive...had the right blinker on and noticed both turn indicators flashing again...pulled in and sat there idling for about three minutes and sure enough the came the warning lights...I killed the engine for about thirty seconds and cranked it back up no lights...drove back around the block with no problems...now I know one light is the generator light and the other is the temp light(don't remember from the manual which was which) but the gen. is freshly rebuilt(and I checked it with my meters...it doing its generating thing) and I have a new sealed battery...is this something anyone has seen before? Just a bad wire somewhere? I'm considering rewiring the entire car(that ought to take all of a weekend...I love old cars without all the computer crap) but I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone else has seen this and maybe had a fix quicker than replacing the entire dozen wires in the car....
Thanks!!

Many odd electrical problems can be traced to the fuse blocks. Unhook the positive lead from the battery and remove and clean each fuse one by one. Clean the fuse and the fuse holder posts with a little wire brush. Crudded up fuses will heat up under load and cause things to cut in and out as they heat and cool. The inexpensive aluminum fuses corrode faster than the good copper types as they are made from a less noble and dissimilar metal.
Do this first and see if the problems go away, if not you might want to check into the turn signal switch and the flasher units. Last edited by Green 912; 10-14-2002 at 06:21 PM.. |

Yesterday, the indicators in my 71 S began by flashing individually but then after a few flashes it would dim and both indicators would flash, like as you mention the hazards would do. This normally means that one of the bulbs has gone. It my case all the bulbs worked correctly so I cleaned the connections on the indicator relay and that fixed the problem.
Sometimes electrical problems can be the worst. Hope you fix it. Regards Alan.UK

Don't forget to clean your ground points, especially that one strap down on the tranny.
on my 69 both dash turn signals light when I turn on the blinker but the correct signal lights on the outside. Craig www.bay912.org |

Found it !! Got under the dash last night and found one wire that went to the right turn indicator had rubbed against one of the wires going into temp guage(where the red and green warning lights are) a little wire repair work and no more phantom lights...I got to thinking about how both of the engine warning lights had been comeing on together so I pulled the temp gauge...sure enough in the back it was all munged up with corrosion between those two lights...cleaned this with a little Trich. and gave it a light conformal coating to prevent future corrosion...no more problem. After seeing how brittle all the wiring is on this car I think I am going to just replace all of the wiring this winter...hopefully thats as easy said as done!
Thanks guys!

Nothing is as easy as it seems on these cars, at least that is how it seems to me! Craig |

There is ton of info on this topic if you do a search, but the short story is dirty ground wires at every possible point affected. The fuses and fuse box can use a good clean up to, take them out and clean or replace where needed.
I have had a interesting thing happen when installing a third stop light in my 69. When the engine is cold and running under 600 rpms after a few seconds the double flasher blinking starts, if I rev a bit it stops. To me this is very telling of the problems we all seem to of had. A drop in voltage due to poor grounds or whatever and in my case an extra energy draw will cause the phenomena. A ground strap is a must for these cars. A note to Green 912; Church Falls Va. is your address listed, I take it your in the middle of that horrific situation. I hope they get the person or people responsible soon, they need to be taken down and out. Stay safe. Chas. 69/912 Last edited by C. Clark; 10-16-2002 at 06:18 AM.. |

Craig,
I wish I would have known about your company when I did my interior, one more option I guess. Here's the address, www.billetspecialties.com/item.asp?cid=9&scid=40&pid=486&rdir=1 my hot rod friends turned me on to this company, I bought door panel lights and the oval 3rd stop light when I re-did the 912. It works fine and is small enough for my taste, they do nice work. Good luck with the engine drop. Chas. 69/912 |
