Rod Nuts

When taking my engine apart I noted that the Connecting Rod Nuts are "plain nuts" I know they must work because of how many engines are out there, but what keeps them from coming loose? They are not castellated, no saftey wire, they are not AN363 high-temperature self-locking, do they use loc-tite? or is it just an old German Secret!!!
