oil system flush
Have any of you flushed the oil system?
I cured my smoking problem this weekend by draining nearly a 1/2 quart of overfill out of the car. Funny thing is this...the oil on the dipstick was nearly new, but the stuff I drained out was like tar...black and thick, with swirls of assembly lube in it... I'm glad I've only driven up and down the street, and not any long distance with it... what would be the best way to clean it?? The kerosene trick?? just an oil change?? asking before I do damage. sjd |

Use a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil in place of an equal amount of oil (just follow the directions). It is solvent based (kerosene?) and cleared out a lot of built up junk in my 69 after sitting for 3 years.

Assembly lube? How old is the motor? Ring and cylinder material if they wear quickly, such as from running too rich, or a broken ring that is cutting the jug, will look like gold or silver dust in the oil. Did you remove the sump plate and look at the magnet on the back of it?
mobil 1 will clean up the insides of an old motor too. Change the oil run for a week and change again. |

the car was disassembled in '79. the engine was rebuilt in the early to mid 90's...then it sat. I thought it was metal flakes too...
I'm gonna pull it the strainer apart when I change the oil. he kept a squirt of oil in the pistons, and rotated the engine over by hand frequently to keep it from seizing. sjd |
