How much $$$ have you spent - just for fun

I totaled up what I have spent on my 912 since day I bought it in 1993.
Just for fun I though I would see who would own up to spending
more than $25k on their 912, $30k anyone, $40k?
I don't mean gas and routine maintenance, I mean buying, restoring,
restoring again, that kind of thing. Come on, somebody make me feel
like I am not alone having spent way too much money to every justify on this car.
Good thing I love it!

I found it pays (no pun intented) not to think too much about it. You sleep better at night that way!

I know

Yeah, I know that is true but that is kind of my point. I don't
think about it because it can be depressing. Just wanted to know
if anyone else had the "guts" to add their total up.

On second thought, I should have left well enough alone!

If I add it up, it would still be fun. That's what it's about. You can't put a $$ value on the fun I've had with this car. Highlights include sunny day driving in the Targa. The West Coast Rendezvous this last summer (over 50 912s all in the same place for a weekend!). Our monthly 912 So Cal meetings. All the neat folks I've meet.

Nope, adding it up wouldn't change a thing. Now, if you ask my wife (please don't) you'd get another answer all together. Beats a girl friend, though!

OK, I'll bite...

Original purchase $1700
Parts car $1200
Webers $600
Top end work $400
Paint $2200 (so far...)
new rubber $700

Total $6800

I've been lucky so far not to get in too deep. The car is a daily driver, rain or shine (well, will be again once it gets back from the paint shop...). It it were about money, you always do better buying a car where someone else has already done the work. But then again, if it were about money we wouldn't be trying to fix up old Porshces either...

I use my '67 as a sunny day driver as often as possible. Try to limit carting my kids around for safety sake and usually take my Volvo V70 if I'm already stressed out and can't afford the anguish of a breakdown. Actually no mishaps at all all summer and early fall. It's running so well that the cosmetics are all that need to be done.The previou owner really covered the bases with brakes, suspencion, and front end work. It needs some rust work and could stand paint. But doing it right will be $$$ and will impress others more than me!

All the above to put the price of participation in focus.

2001 .... paid $4500 for good running car
$125 generator rebuild
$100 tire
$120 shoulder belt
$ 50 misc gen pully parts
$ 20 wiring
$ 75 throttle linkage
$ 10 switches
$125 another generator
2002 $125 fuel gauge in tank
$220 another generator rebuild
$45 regulator
$100 tire
$ 45 wheel align

Total about $ 6000 with plugs, wipers, etc.
This is without looking at a stack of parts receipts. I would have guessed less.

ENJOY ... Jim in Ma.

1967 912 Targa (soft rear window)

Purchase price (1997): $8500
New Engine (Maestro): $9200
Pans, bodywork: : $1500

So, give or take, $20k. Consider that a new Mini will run you that, and it doesn't nearly have the panache or history that my 912 does, methinks it's cheap.

And it sure beats having a car payment.

Ive found it easier, after long term ownership to figure it on the long term. I have spent 13000 , more or less on my restoration. Thought I did most of the work myself. My labor not figured in.
Now that I have a very driveable, fun, know it myself car and have the support of a thousand plus other enthusiests, its priceless.
I know Ill save it for the second childhood. See ya Mike
