generator removal
new generator came in yesterday and i look forward to not having to plug the car in at the end of the day...generator's out but i need to get the fan off and can't seem to find an easy way to seperate it from the generator...i can always take it to a shop, i'm sure they'll be able to pull it off but is it just a matter of simply turning the bolt inside the fan housing while securing the other end of the generator shaft? any experience/suggestions would be greatly appreciated as always

Use an impact tool, gets it off in about 2 sec.

Put the nut back on the fan pulley end and secure a vise grip to it in the absence of a table mounted vise. With another wrench on the fan nut apply a lot of force to it .... in a vise no problem. On the floor you'll have to put your foot on the generator.
Tip. Make certain the new gen is internally shimmed the same as the old and be sure to "polorize" it. Jim in Ma. |

thank you both...was able to get the fan nut off with an impact wrench-everything went smoothly from that point on...the shiny new generator almost looks out of place in the engine compartment...one more question in response to your answer, jim...how do you polarize the generator? thanks again!

The generator should be polarized to avoid damage to the regulator. Connect the battery lead to terminal 61/D+ on the regulator. The generator should start to run in the direction of engine rotation. Then replace the fan belt.
