Motor inspection tips?

Hello Pelicans,

I have located a motor for sale locally and am planning to go take a look at it. Assuming that it turns and is complete what else should I look for short getting a compression test done?

Cracked heads, sheared bolt studs?

Thanks

What are your plans for it? Without hearing/seeing it run, I would assume it needs a rebuild and hope it is priced accordingly.

I have a car with a VW type 1 in it so I'm looking for an original motor. It's been stored in a garage for about ten years, came out of a running car and is priced at $3,500. How's the price.
