EECS Exhaust Emission Control System

I am just getting started on my newly acquired 912 that has been sitting for 12 years. There is a EECS system in the engine compartment but it is disconnected (no belt on compressor and no hoses to carb air cleaners). Question: Can I remove the system and plug the hose inlets to engine? It doesn't seem to have any function at present.
I have second question: Fuel pump removal...I have a mechanical fuel pump and I want to remove it along with filter and fuel lines to have all reconditioned (replaced) before I try and fire up the engine. I can't get access to bottom nut on fuel pump from above. Is there access from below or do I remove something from above to access? A mystery....

There is a small piece of the sheet metal that you remove and then the bottom nut can be gotten from underneath.

It sounds like a 68 engine. With the smog pump remove just plug the holes in the heads.

If you have a black cap on your distributor. It is most likely a 050. You need to replace this with a 022, 031, 061, or a RS0012, for your best performance. The 050 and also a 007 were VW replacement distributor use by some to save money. However, their advance curve is not for a 912 engine.

Perfect. Just what I needed. I will check out the distributor cap as well.
I will have more questions as I go.
I'm a TR 6 guy so the Porshce is all new to me.
My first lesson is assessibility of engine parts...........pretty tight.
Thank you for your help.
