Timing light turns off at rpm
here's the scoop
had a cheapo timing light - no advance knob - worked just fine but wanted one with an advance dial went to Sears and bought there super-duper one with the advance hooked it up to my 912, light works fine at low rpm's, but as soon as it's higher (maybe around 2000 or so), it just shuts off - light shuts off? any ideas? I tried moving the induction clamp around, but no difference. I changed my leads (swapped them), but when I pressed the trigger, the engine would try to stall thanks in advance |

If you hooked the NEW light up the same as the OLD. And the OLD one worked above 2k, you have a bad NEW light. Not sure, one of my induction clamps has an arrow that points to the plug, but think that on my RPM gauge.
Find the OT letters? BRETT |

well, I figured it 'may' be a faulty light, but I didn't want to look too much like an idiot returning it and finding out that it was user error!
and, yeah - the OT mark - I 'think' I can see it (it's not that visible), but it looks like a stamp or something - you're right, go figure those Porsche engineers for coming up with this stuff! thanks Brett, Troy |

just replying to my own post...
got the timing light working OK when I hooked the +ive up to the coil, and the black to the engine mount instead of the coil. For some reason, it didn't like both coming from the coil |

Is the negative terminal of my coil supposed to be at chassis ground? Right now there are 2 wires going to it... a black one that comes from the harness along with the red wire hooked to the positive terminal and a green one that goes into the distributor. When the engine is off, there is no voltage on the negative terminal, when its running, there is and if I ground it it kills the engine. Normal, gremlin, or just wired wrong.... waddaya'all think? ![]() Morrie 67 912 Coupe UPDATE: After thinking this over... the points close the ground connection for the coil when the distributor rotor contacts the plug connections in the cap, right????? Or am I still confused.... ![]() Morrie Last edited by Morrie; 11-30-2002 at 07:58 AM.. |

Hey Morrie
No, the neg. side of your coil is NOT ground. At least the wiring dia. Im looking at. The red wire is by itself on the coil. This is hot 12 +. The other side of the coil goes to the distr. and Tach(black -purple trace) Do you have points or electronic ? Brett Last edited by adot; 12-02-2002 at 06:55 AM.. |

I have points. set to the best of my ability but the gap is so small its a chore. My tach floats up to around 2 K intermittently. I don't want to rebuild it in case its not the cause.... any thoughts??
