IMHO, probably more like a cross between a 911 and a 914.....

Garage
1976 912E was essentially a strippo 911 with a 90hp 914 2.0L Type IV four cylinder.
All prior 912s (1965-69) were strippo 911's with the 356 1.6L 90hp Super 90 flat 4.

Body-wise, the 76 912E has more in common with 74-up 911's than the 65-69 912's.
Engine-wise, it has more in common with the 75 914 (although the fuel injection used is different from 914 2.0L to 912E 2.0L).

Therefore: 911+914=912E so Morrie is essentially correct!

Whew!

One other important thing about 912E.

Rust treatment! No other 912 got it from the factory. In many repsects, the 912E was a truly modern car.

Also, wasn't the 912E the last air-cooled 4-cylinder made by Porsche ? This kind of makes it the final descendent in the progression from 356 to 912 to 912E, doesn't it ?

Don't forget to wedge the 914 in there somewhere.....

Also... I hear heat exchangers and FI parts are a challenge to get for the 912E.....

Sorry Morrie, I didn't mean to overlook the 914 - I was thinking in terms of the basic 356/912/911 body style.

But you still have a wealth of type 4 followers in that arena that will be more than happy to help you maintain and source parts for your 912E. There are plenty of aftermarket suppliers manufacturing products ranging from exhaust systems to fuel injection to even reliable big bore kits (shameless plug, I know). I know of two people with 912e's and they love them :-)

Take care,
