050 distributor- Installation Woes
Hi Guys,
I am running a brand new 009 that the PO installed and am told by tons of postings to switch to an 050. WHY do all the ads I see ask near 500 bucks for an 050 and only around 50 for an 009? Duane Spencer's book states the 050 can be had for around 50 bucks. WHERE? Brazil? Also, isn't the only difference the weights for the advance? Also, when we switch to electronic ignition, does this improve the situation in the 009. Have a small budget so am doing my best to get it right as I can and waste no dough... What ad's are you looking at ? $500 noway. Maybe a Porsche 031 NEW, but a VW 050 dist. $100 at most. My budget is very small too. I didnt spend much for my 050. No more than $100. I think, 009 is for WOT most of the time. Brett |

Where has been well answered.
Why? 009 has an incorect advance curve for your motor, advance starts too early and not enough total. Just changing springs or grinding the weights will not corect this. Recurving a dizzy requires skill and $$$ tools to do right. I have never seen a 050 for $500 but you never know, might see a 031 in perf cond for close to that. 050 still being made and sell new for little $ so don't bother with used. |

Hey Morrie, To replace the cap, rotor, condenser, and points in my 031 the cost was $30. A new 050 from Zims here in Dallas was $69. Made in Brazil but really works well. TDC is at 7 o'clock instead of 4 but other than that I dropped it in and it worked. Let me know if I need to send you one or call Zims Autotechnik at 817-267-4451 toll free. Later DG
