Hella H4's in 912
Anyone here install H4's into their 912? I'm looking at the Pelican Catalog and see a complete Bosch kit for $129, and a Hella kit for $47.50.
Any difference? Do these simply bolt in? Also, what's the difference between the DOT and non-DOT (I know there are some states that required DOT but...) Troy

I've got H4's in my 66. There an old style glass lens which I think you can't buy any more. The new lens has sort of edge on the top part. Heaps better light IMO.

Troy:
The Bosch unit for $129 is the complete replacement unit (used to be called the European version.) They're great lights and look great since they're made specifically for the 900 series cars. The units Damon shows in the photo of his great looking car, as he mentions, are the early style (NLA) and are the correct units for the early cars (someone might add to this, but I believe the later "flat lens" H4's came a little later along with the H-1's , maybe 69/70?) The Hellas you mention are probably round replacement headlights which merely replace the sealed beams in your current headlight buckets-which use a non-fluted lens in US market cars(pre-68). If you can spring for them, the Bosch lights really finish off the design of the car (IMO.) If you're just after good, bright halogen units, just about any of the round replacements (Ebay, etc.) work well. As far as DOT, most H-1 & H-4 lights were, until around the 80's, non-approved (the law goes back to industrial/farm equipment lighting laws) & only allowed sealed-beam units in the US - that's why the Euro spec cars of the past looked so great and we got the various modified light designs. Good luck, Bill. |
