1967 912 Cali car bought in SC...
I'm new to the 912 club. I will post a few glamor shots. I will be leaning on this forum since I have no idea what I'm doing with 912's ,lol....

What are the little bulbs for?
Obviously I cut them out, but they are at the very front of the headlight casing.

Interesting car. The dual bulb headlamp is from either a 356 or VW. 912s did not use this arrangement. The S front/rear deco strip is also unusual. Looks like a '67? The head light buckets have been replaced if the car was an original US import. They were used on some early Euro delivery cars, that used the blub rather than the seal beams of the US cars.
Some countries required that you did not use the headlights in the cities and towns, only parking lights. So the little blub made it a little easier to see the car. Especially when there weren't any street lights. My Euro car has the little blub. The Chrome around the windows, the grill, and the outside mirror have been painted black. The Seats have been changed (actually for the better), The steering wheel nor the gear shift is not original or the radio. You have carpets rather than the rubber mats. You also have 911 S trim on the bumpers. It looks like one of the PO's was wanting to upgrade the car to look like a newer Porsche. However, It can be restored to it's original state. If this is what you are looking to do. Some items will or may be expensive to replace. One good place to start is "Parts Obsolete", though you may have some closer to SC. |

The 912 and the 911 in the 901 and 902 body are become rarer as the days go by. Cutting the top off would almost be sacrilege in to days market. The price of purchasing them is just going up.
If you have never really driven a 912. You will find it much more forgiving than a 911. It can be driven closer to the edge with easier recovery. It is much quicker than 911's, of the same vintage, on a very tight road/course. They are just a different drive than a 911. Obviously you are not as fast and don't have the push you in the back seat acceleration of a 911. However the 912 acceleration is actually very deceptive. On real continuous tight corners you can actually leave a 911 behind. So you can have as much fun at 80 in a 912 as you can at 100 in a 911. Drive it and enjoy it. |

I appreciate that . Once I saw the condition, the thought perished. I really am enjoying the 356/911 feel of the car. Just got her started and took a short drive around the driveway. Really smooth car.

Jaems correct me. However, my PET from 11/66 does not show this type of carrier as an option even with the H4.

There wasn't a H4 HL blub in the early cars, this was a later development. The Hella came with just a blub that was listed in Candle lights. The blub were very or almost unattainable to find. I replaced my Euro HL bucket assembly with a US assembly until I was able to find the blubs again. I still have LNIB OEM US light assemblies. The first Euro HL assembly, you have in your picture, is like the one I have on my car (see picture). They are now making (and I found a source) a H4 blub replacement for the early Euro cars. The blub and H4 blub for the early cars used a much wider base than the H4 that Bosch uses. (see picture) The Bosch H1 and H4 Headlight assemblies were not available until Porsche switched to Bosch in 73/74 for their lights. Up until then Porsche was still using Hella. Many of the earlier cars replace their US HL with the H1/H4 Bosch assemblies as a updated upgrade for better lighting than the original seal beams. Though they were not original to their cars. Each countries had it's own regulation on the use of headlights on cars. Some like Italy required that you did not use Headlights in the city/town limits. So companies like Bosch and Hella made a city light headlight assemblies to accommodate better visibility in these countries. France required that you only used a yellow light for the headlights. The seal beam gave the poorest light of all the different lighting requirements. ![]()
