912 conversions

Hi 912'rs! I'm over on the 914 board mostly, a little of everything else. I tried searching around here for some info, but I really don't have that specific a question.

Here's the deal. I'm shopping around for an early 911/912 on the cheap. I have a spare 2.7 six and a couple of TypeIV motors that could go into a roller with trans. The issue with buying a 911E is that here in CA, I would have to smog it. '73 and on back, no smog.

What would be the advantages/ disadvantages of putting a T4 in a '66-'69? Same for the six?

Hello Zeke,

I would first ask myself what is the long-term plan for the vehicle? Daily Driver? Track? Occassional ricer azz-whumpin machine?

I believe that the Type IV challenge would be a motor mount and the engine tin. These are both rare items for the 923/912E. I have read over on STF that there are carbon Fibre units that can be utilized for the cooling tin, but I am sure that it will add up $$$$.

Personally, I would look for a '72 911T roller and drop in that 2.7 . I like the uniqueness of the outside filler access for the oil tank...

Oh well, just my 2 cents worth of thoughts...

Thank you, Bob. That is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I didn't think of the engine tin problem. So, the motor mounts differ from the early 912s to the 912E, right?

I would love to find a '72-'73 T or E 911 with a blown motor, but they are not around at the moment. That's why I was considering the 912 conversion.

Yes, the mounts on the 912E are unique (do you need a pic of one?), although I have heard that they can be fabricated using one from an alternate VW vehicle. I seem to recall that the infamous Otto posted his process, for fabricating one, on this forum last spring...

Dont give up on your quest for that roller 911...I am still kickin myself in the azz for not jumping on a '76 911 with a blown motor last Dec. The car was in South Gate, rough condition (no dents), seller was asking $1,000...hell the wheels/tires were worth that much. Be patient, try Pomona next Sunday.

Hmmm, last summer I heard about a roller at one of the local salvage yards. I dont recall the year of the vehicle...I shall follow up this week and get back to you. Out of respect for our host, I will not post their name or address publicly...send me your e-mail address...

I have never done an install into an early 912, but I have supplied 20-30 customer with the engines ready to be installed. It seems very easy and even some guys have done it without having a garage, just a driveway and a piece of plywood..

I can set the engine up so it slides in with no problems, the engine mounts from a bus can be used to fab a mount for the engine, no problem.
