Lightbulb 901 gearbox

Anyone ever replaced 1st and 2nd syncro's on their 901 gearbox? I'm contemplating an engine/gearbox pull shortly, to fix head gasket leak, new piston rings. Any advice?

Is it a 5 or 4 speed? I have done everything to my 902 and have 2 spares sitting around which should be about the same. 1st gear is real easy, just pull the front cover, there it is. 2nd you need to seperate the intermediate plate and remove all the shift forks and pull both main input shaft and pinion shaft to get to the second gear, little more work but not too bad, just make sure you messure your gaskets twixt the case and intermediate plate and replace with the exact same thickness, with a gasket set you should get 3 different sizes to mix and match, or you can order form porsche what size you need. BYW if anyone has or knows where I can get a (W) gear set I would like to swap out my U set 5th gear.

You should get a book showing the detail or I can scan and email to you the exact instructions showing detent, fork setup and the fact that you need it in 5th gear to seperate the case etc.

Thanks Craig. It's a 5 speed. Sounds like it would be a good little project.

Craig, iv'e seen your rebuild posts. My engine is very sound, apart from an oil leak around no.1 cylinder head, which i would suggests why no.1 cylinder is also slightly down in compresssion. What do people recommend, apart from the head, to do to the engine? rings maybe? when the engine/gearbox is out.

The oil leak should not change the compression but I did have serious oil leaks also and found when I took the engine apart the lower head bolts use an O ring around the outside to seal against the inside of the head and mine were very hard and cracked. I would guess these could be replaced without pulling the heads? If you have one cylinder low I would do a leak down test that way you could tell if its rings or valves and which one, ex or in.
