Ignition switch or lock replacement
 
Hello, my 912 from 1969 was almost stolen last week. I was fortunate enough that they were unable to take the car with them. The problem now is that they drilled out the lock from from the ignition switch. Does anybody now where to buy a replacement lock or a complete new ignition set? I attached a photo of the damage that was done.

I looked around and it seems really difficult to find. So all help or suggestions are welcome.

Sad story. How did they get into the car? Lot of damage?

If I'm right Porsche changed their ignition switches for the 912 for model year 1969 from just an ignition switch into the type combined with a steering wheel lock. These units consist of an electrical part (the switch) and a mechanical part (key lock and steering wheel lock. It's no fun to take these apart, because the locking part should be drilled out before the other parts can be reached to repair. Do a search here on the board with "ignition switch" to find more info on the subject.

I think you will be lucky having the newer type and parts will be available on the net. The early types are hard to find and pricy.

Take the switch and steering wheel lock unit out and take a look what you will need (part numbers). Basically it could be possible to adapt the new key lock to your old existing ignition key. But that's an other story ...

Hello Otto,

They were able to get into the car by forcing the rear window and then open the front door from the inside. So fortunately not too much damage.

The ignition switch is actually one without a steering wheel lock and yes I tried to find a replacement but it was really difficult to find one for a reasonable price. So if you have any suggestion that would be great.

The early 356 w/o the steering lock will work on the 65-68 911/912. It can be fitted to the 69 912. Pelican has them here for $56.50. You just won't have a steering lock. Like us early cars.

Also Porsche wrecking yards, Parts Heaven, or Parts Obsolete may also have the locking type.

Correct Jaems, functionally the switches will be the same and so the wire colors will be - 911 and 912 wiring harness are the same. However it could be that the pin-layout of the early 912 switch differs from the one with the steering wheel lock. So check carefully.

Remember that the steering wheel lock mechanism should be removed, old or newer type switch. So there is no gain in work to be done. With the current values of the 912s in mind, I would go for an original replacement, new or used. It's just one of these unique '69 912 features.

Check the color of the wires on your switch.

Thanks Jaems, I was to lazy to search my archive for the diagrams.

It could be a bit confusing for Eelco. He has a '69 912, so I think he also should have the '69 wiring harness and color coding as used in the 911 and 912. As you noted, it's very important to check colors with respect to the switch function and not the switch pin numbering!

I hope he will leave a message with the solution he used for his car.

Thanks Otto and Jaems for your input. I was actually able to recover the label with the part number and it is 901.613.101.12. I did some more searching on the internet and was able to find some replacement options. But to be honest the prices are quite high so I am still thinking about my options. My first choice would be to restore it to its original state, but the alternative would be to use a replacement part like Jaems suggested.

If anybody knows where to find an original replacement part for a reasonable price, I would love to hear from you.

If I go for the alternative option I will let you know what wiring configuration I used.

I am not sure about the 901.613.101.12. I can't find it in the parts book.

However, the factory listings for the ignition key switch w/o lock for 1966-1969 is 901.613.013.00. $175.25

The one with lock 1966-1969 is 901.613.101.01. $247.55

These were the 1991 and 1994 prices at Stoddard. I doubt anyone would notice that you didn't have a lock steering wheel. They have at least double/tripled in resent years.

The 356C is 644.613.101.06.

The number for Easy is 510.653.3279

The number for Parts Heaven is 1.800.767.7250.

Either one of these two should have a used ignition switch or new one that will work.
