Engine Tin
 

What supports the engine compartment tin at the rear of the car? Mine appears to hang loose and is attached at the front only.

Advice / pictures appreciated.

springs...

cant remember where I saw the picture...PP or socal912...

basically there's a cotter pin bent into a T, it goes through a hole in the engine tin in the corner, then a spring attaches that to the little triangle in the corner...

A spring, and a cotter pin through a hole in the corner... sounds like missing parts on mine!

The springs are 2 1/2 in. but I think 2 1/4 would pull the pan up tighter.

Hi

There should be two brackets coming up from either side of the stock exhaust system. These brackets are basically a bar with a twist top and bottom.

The exhaust brackets...oh yeah...I forgot that not everyone has a bursch exhaust.

I had the same question for years, looking at the back tin sag leaving a 1-2 inch gap and a view of the ground beneath. After looking at the stock muffer setup on Steve Patrick's Targa, I realized the Bursch exhaust system was missing brackets that are present on a stock setup. The back tin is prop up and closes the gap nicely. I'm been thinking that a set of clamps and metal brackets could be fabricated to support the tin in a similar fashion for a Bursch setup but I decided to go back to a stock muffer setup as an experiment on sound deadening on my 912. So far, the tin is up and I can heard the radio again with the windows down.

BTW, the two holes on the back edge of the tin (off center left & right) are where the respective bracketrs mounted to the tin with pan screws.

Isn't the tin suposed to be sandwiched between the 2 rubber gaskets? one above and one below?
It looks from the photo as if your tin is being pulled up against the bottom rubber and both gaskets are above the tin, thus making the spring work harder because it's not being helped by the rubber gasket.
I think if the gaskets were new, the tin would be held in place without any support spring.
What does everyone think?

Woops... yer right, there are 2 layers there! (duh- how'd I miss that?)

I'll try and get the tin into the slot and see if it stays there on its own. Also bought some springs in case.

I have no idea if this pic will post or not but here goes.

This is RonD setup in Chicago, he has a light piece of aluminum (I think) that has been cut to length and painted obviously. It just lays in the engine compatment and you can see one of the bolts that is used, towards the top of the pic, it is used pull the tin up to the seal. There is also one at the end I am standing at when taking the pic. These bolts rpived the tension on both the bar and tin so no movement occurs. At each end of the aluminum piece is a piece of 1/4" thick rubber I think it was, to keep the aluminum bar from digging into the paint and or engine bay coating.

Overall a very clean setup that actually works.

Scutty is right: It should fit between the rubber gasket, my 69 has no problem with the tin fitting properly. You will have a problem if not properly installed or bent out of shape. The Rube Goldberg solution should not be necessary (although very ingenious).

I plan to enlist the help of my unsuspecting wife this weekend to try to get the tin back into the groove. I bet thats all it will take as the rubber seems to be in good shape. We'll see.
