vw into 912?

Ive got a chance to pickup a 912 that is just missing the engine. i also have a 2180 vw motor that was a spare for a class 5 baja in my shop. Is this a direct boltin or what needs to be done. thanks in advance

should be pretty close to direct. Type IV I presume?? IIRC, they were bolt ins...the others took some engine mount mods...

I think it bolts right to the 901 gearbox...

a quick search should turn up something.

Most likely a Type 1 since that's not a common displacement for any Type 4 build-up.

If it is a Type 1, you'll need to run a 912 flywheel to fit the 901 box and still work with the starter. Then you'll need to figure out sealing tin and a rear engine hanger. How you bolt that to a Type 1 I don't know.

For a Type 4, it's a bolt-in using a 914 flywheel. Then you'll need to fab the rear mounting bar (can modify a bus one), and some sealing tin. I'm doing this conversion right now, and it is not complicated.

Sealing it up and getting the right flywheel are your two biggest stumbling blocks. Plus, a hot-rodded Type 1 based engine is a ticking time bomb already, and then bolting it to a heavier car isn't going to help things.

Good luck,

G
