tuning by ear, tank filter...

does anyone else tune by ear?

I've got an 022 distributor, and an otherwise stock 912 engine with solexes...

I set the timing just like the manual says to, but the car ran like crap (timing was too far advanced). Being an ME with a fairly heavy automotive background, I figured just retard it a bit, ran like crap, retard a bit more, WOW runs great, heats nicely, no popping, sputtering, and left a big ol' black mark up the driveway when I got on it.

I know for a fact that it's gotta be more retarded than 3 deg. BTDC. I'm estimating 6-10 out?.. It's where the car wants to run though...it throttle really nice, no bogging, nothing bad at all.

could it just be a misadjustment on the carb??? Or is this just where she wants to run.

Question 2 is, the intank pickup filter was in BAD shape, like real bad. I cut it all off, and just have the pipe into the tank now. The tank has been re-coated (Eastwoods kit is awesome) and I've provided pre-pump filtration just before the pump. You guys think this will harm anything by doing it this way or should I try to find another intank pickup??

Hi Steve,

I have heard that a worn engine may perform better with further retardation... this from a mopar guy though.

I'd add an inline filter down by the tank to stop any particulate matter that would have otherwise been captured by the screen and could clog a line. Other than that, I think you should be fine.

Best,
Morrie

Hi would keep the finger filter in the tank. (buy another one) it then stops it at source then. If you just have the filter at the pump what if crud gets half way down the matal pipe (just where you are sitting ) and gets stuck......

I still would have one next to the pump. They cost silly money anyway. Those tank sealing kits are great if it all works well mine made the tank look like new great.

I cleaned my finger filter with this great stuff. It's a Hammerite Product here in the UK. It is a Spray De greaser wow what it does is great. And I mean GREAT!!!!!!!!!. I just poured some out in to a tub and left it over night the whole filter looks like new. I did not even know what a filter like this looked like. Until it was this clean. So even if you come across a petrol glazed old one at a swap meat you should get it for silly money clean it and it's like new.

I tried cleaning it with petrol (gas) waste of time. This De greaser just wipped it's A$$. great stuff. I did wash it loads after and then in petrol to be 100% sure it was clean.

Good luck

For now, put an additional in line filter next to the tank before the line enters the tunnel. This will prevent clogs in the main line at least.

tank screen

If you have trouble finding that in tank screen, they are standard feature in aviation fuel tanks.

Aircraft Spruce ( 1 800 824 1930 ) has them.
