Gearbox Confirmation Question
I'm near here, but have been on the 944 and 911 boards for years. I have a 1967 barn find 912. Irish Green and she can be saved.
The engine is gone - a V8 is roughly bolted into the rear now -- but the gearbox is there along with a so so interior, but with rust crude on all the panels. Could someone please confirm the following regarding the gearbox: The stamped number on the case nose is 234689. That would make it the five year unit with gears, A, F, M, S, X and a 7:31 r/p, correct?. The car's serial number has it built late in the Karman model run in 1966 even though it's titled as a 67 and the serial number matches it. Also, on the case the following casting marks are show: 26/66, that I assume is for 26 week in 1966? And i have no idea what this mark means: 901.901.101.0R Given that the prior owner put in a V8, what's the story on the case? Any ideas? |
If it is a 5 speed there should be a 902/1 on the case. If it is a 4 speed then there will be a 902/0 on the case.

That 901.xxx.xxx.0R is a trans case casting number. Cars produced After Aug 66 would be 1967 model year cars. And you're correct that the trans serial # corresponds to that
5sp with the gear set you mention. Bill |
Thanks Bill.

That serial series for the 1967 912 started with 234001, so it is a fairly early 1967 912.
Bill is correct about the case casting #. You are correct about the casting date and gears. The casting date is often a few months before the transmission is installed in a car. What is the VIN? I would not use that transmission with a V8. |
Trust me the V8 is coming out and I hope the PO didnt ruin the gearbox with it.
