Does anyone out there have a version of the (911/912) Porsche Technical Specifications book? I am trying to determine where my transmission came from.
The quick "live and learn" background: I've got a 1966 912 and when buying the car I checked to see that the engine and chassis numbers matched. However, I did not check the transmission. I'm not planning to enter into any contests, so it's not a big deal, but still, I should have been a smarter shopper. I am happy with the transmission, a 5-speed, but I believe it is off a 1969 911. The transmission's model # is 901/13 and the serial # is 7197516. My restoration book (by Dr. B. Johnson) indentifies the 901/13 model number as either a 1969 911E or 1969 911S, but the book does not indicate serial number ranges. My Technical Specs book provides serial number ranges for transmissions, but it was printed in December of 1967 and does not cover the '69 model year. I am hoping a later version of the Technical Specs book would provide a definitive answer. I suppose that some day I might try to track down a 902/1 transmission--probably when a rebuild of the current one becomes necessary. Thanks!

My parts book shows this SN# as a 69 911 targa gearbox, your book must be correct.

I bet you will get used to the 901/13 and would be disappointed with a 902/1. The 901 has a taller set of gears and is a good highway driving trans. The 902s are getting hard to find as they had the shorter 6/29 ring and pinion rather than the 911 type 7/31 and the vintage track rats love them. I have both and use a 6/29 902/5 speed for short tracks and the 901/13 for street and long tracks. I did drop the 901s 5th gear down one letter.
