I have recieved an e-mail from someone who is trying to ship a car from Portugal to the US.

Anybody out there have any advice on how to do this and or companies they might suggest?

Craig

shipping

My car was handled by California Shipping in Stanton, CA. www.calship.com
They handled the move from Sacramento on truck to LA into container to New Zealand.
Mel was brilliant, best price, well packed, car arrived in perfect condition (then the %*@#?!s here delt to it)
He's busy so he can take a few days to reply to emails. He deals through Europe as well.
I'll go there again!

Most Important

The wisdom of hindsight!
Take as many before photos as you can! All over, under and in!!! I now wish I had more!
Get insurance!!!!! I was told sometimes they want the photos.

HI Mel at Ca shipping is great .He is a New Yorker who doesn't take any ***** . Take him a big ciggar when you go. Then talk deals.

I used another company in Ca in the end .long story
The guy (Turkey) they used to load the car from the seller let it go......down the hill..........! a 356 Pre-A 54. Nice man still looking for him ..............

Then he could not get it on his truck left the cars on the road side for two DAYS!!!! all these companies are fine, nice clean prof, companies but they all (just my experience so far)use Turkeys to move them about and load up the cars. I know what shoe size they all are >I have a nice few dozen of them on the roof and hood!!!!

The insurance is a waste of time as they don't want to pay out FULL STOP>>>> I know a guy still waiting now for 4 years... Get it for total loss but panel damage live with it.

Photo's have them but you need them dated or with the shipper stood next to it on that day with his paper and both sets of this parents and his dog ....you get the idea.

I am sure not all cars are damaged but a fair few are I know most of the guys I deal with have had them damaged in some way.

I do Hope you get it all ok .

Photo taken when the guy came to pick the car up . It had not seen the light of day for 28 years . So it got woken up and sent down the hill. NICE........

But I am happy they are here.

Damage

And here I was pissed-off with my damage.
A smashed windscreen (windshield) and the front torsion bar mount smashed off. Dent in front bumper.
They pushed it off the truck and left wheel came off the ramp. Also a crate scraped down the drivers door -thankfully only paint.
This was all by the handlers here after car was safely out of the container and carefully inspected by me.
Got the money for the paint scrape, but court battle is about to begin for the other.
A guy I've since met has imported about 45 cars and every one has been damaged in some way. I don't know why he hasn't had problems with insurance?
The footprint one is quite common. Moving cars with a fork hoist is another good one. I can't understand the mentality...

Lightbulb euro cars

I used to be an operations amnager for Japan Lines and shipped about 12 MBZ and 6 356's...only used cans aka containers. The T&E guys (transportation and exportation) prepped and properly wired car to can and locked it before it ever went to the docks.
I still have lots of friends in the business that would help if you need.

As far as I know Mel no longer works at Cal Shipping. I have also used them for cars coming out of CA and everthing arrived ok, bar a smashed pair of fog lights.
