There's also something to be said about keeping these cars close to original equipment not only for the stock appearance, but also to experience the original driving characteristics as designed by the Porsche engineers back in the day. My 68 has been backdated to 4.5 chromes with 165's. It drives just like the new ones I drove in the late sixties. If it's all-out cornerning I want, then just about any modern sport coupe with some good tires on it will outshine the early Porsches, but that's a whole different thing.

Thanks Bill for weighing in,

I agree on all counts. The P6000's are pricey and the bang for the buck equivocations are interesting to say the least.

I think it's the 6000's for all the reasons you mention and as this resto has been a long time coming why quibble for the extra bucks...lol.

Cheers

I've always been happy with my Hankook Venus V12s, but as other members have stated, Michelle PSS are terrific tires.

I have 185/65 R15s (on 5.5"/6" "Gurney" wheels) that I got from Costco. I think it is a Prius tire, so common. I just put them on to get the car rolling and get it home safely (previous owner paid for them actually). But since they have gotten compliments, and they are paid for, they have grown on me.

Forgive my ignorance... what are 'Gurney Wheels'?

"Gurney" wheels are mag wheels
that could be the reproductions of the McAfee wheels from the 60's which offered an alternative to Fuchs.

Dmitri,

I put Hankook Ventus in an offset set on my SL 500.... major handling and response result!
I think the AMG wheels really help in looks as well.
