Question 4.5 rim tires

My 65 has steel 4.5 rims - what is the largest tire that will fit? Also, if I were to go to Fuchs, what is the largest rim/Tire that would fit. I looked at the threads for the past year and could not find anything.

Terry

With the 4.5s you are stuck running 165-15s. I'd either upgrade to 5.5s steel or Fuchs 5.5-6 in width. You can run 195/60 and 195/65s on the 5.5s and up to a 205/55 and 205/60 on the 6.0s.

no way dude.

you can get 175's on (just took them off)...and I'm gonna attempt 185's...

the sidewalls are tall enough that it shouldn't make a difference.

I have seen 195/65-15s on 4.5s. They can be mounted, but the manufacturers frown on it. You issues with sidewall flex and instability in hard cornering. Better handling to stick with a modern 165 or go with the bigger 5.5 rim and put a 195/60 or 195/65 on it. Set of 5.5 just sold on eBay for $125. Not a bad price.

Do you see any clearance problems with 5.5 with the 195/60 or 195/65 on a 65? I dont know if the 67 or 69 were different....... I dont see how 6.0 would work at all.

I ran a 15X6 on my '66 with 205/60 tires and never had a problem. I use the same combo on the '69 without issues.

I had 205/50/15's on 4.5 inchers. I wouldn't recommend it, but I had the tires and the wheels in the basement and needed something to roll the car around on for a short time. The sidewalls were pulled inward dramatically.
