engine Rebuild

It looks like I am gonna pull my engine on account of vast quantities of smoke billowing out of the exhaust and oil filler vent.
So... while I have it out I might as well go for a rebuild.
The engine was idle for about ten years and I ran it for a monthy before it gave up the ghost.

I wont know whethewr problem is valves, rings or worse untill I tear it down.

Has anybody had experience with Zims rebuild kit (EK 356-3) ?

Any advice or alternate suggestions would be appreciated.

I have the ":Secrets of the Inner Circle", the 912 handbook put out by Lash International, and Duane Spencers book.

Danke........Ron

It might be worthwhile to test the motor prior to pulling it. Then you will have a rough idea of what you are looking at and can pre plan somewhat. If the smoke is all the time rather than mostly on startup then I might think rings, P&C.

Do a compression and leakdown test to see if it is the rings or valve guides (or both) At least read the plugs. You might find that only one cyl in involved and can then just fix the problem rather than rebuild. A stuck set of rings on the cyl that had an open ex valve during the long sleep could give the symptoms you describe. Water getting into the carbs and down past the intake valves can make a fine mess too but then you mostly have bigger problems right from the start.

Zims sells good stuff as well as Shasta and 356 enterprises.

Good luck with it.
